Fear can be such a paralysing factor in life and of course we all think of it when it comes to the big things. However, as a woman living in Kenya, fear is a constant. Fear of being verbally attacked for not responding to a stranger or the fear of being followed by a stranger because you said hello back. Sometimes, hanging that outfit because you know it will only bring you trouble in the streets of in a matatu. Sleeping with a knife next to you because you don’t know if someone will break into your house.
The lengths we go to stay safe are never enough because sometimes the people causing you harm are people you consider friends or even family. This is an extremely scary way to exist in this world. Constantly looking over your shoulder, knowing that it doesn’t matter how well you try to protect yourself, there still no guarantees that you will be safe just because you took measures.
The most we can do is keep it moving and hope for the best.
Stay safe out there ladies.
