I hope you have been well, as well as you can be. I am tempted to say, “Long time no correspondence,” but then again, it’s the first time I’m writing to you. An introduction seems most appropriate.
Muthoni is my name. For as long as I can remember, I have loved to write. I wrote about anything and everything. And as it would be with most of us, life happened. But not in the way you’d think.
More like, I met a boy. Now, if you have met a boy in the last decade, you might be shocked to learn that boys these days are not as advertised in the romance novels we grew up reading. They are no longer interested in wooing, courting, honestly, even caring one bit for us lover girls. Thanks to these revelations, many a lover girl’s heart has become hardened. Anyway, back to this boy. He met me writing about love and left me writing about not wanting to exist anymore. I think that’s what we call 0 to 100.
Don’t feel sorry for me. As some would say, ‘ni life ‘. Not a great response, but I understand why people say it. Sometimes that’s the fastest route to pretending we are healed. Also, it cuts the conversation inquisition short.
Our journey may be in the infancy stage, but I promise to get to know you and share more of myself with you. I did not intend to burden you with the things that led me to abandon my writing. What matters most is that I am back to my first love.
I would like to share her with You, if you’ll let me. I want to tell you about the things that keep me up at night. The silent and loud battles I’m fighting, the situations annoying the hell out of me every single day. The things that make me smile, cry, choke, freeze, hide. The things keeping me alive, well living. There’s a difference there.
I want to hang out with you. With your, tea or coffee in hand, after a long day at work. In your fuzzy slippers and happy pants if you have them. Then we can be happy or mad at the world together.
I might not always be great company, but I will keep you company several times a month. That’s my promise to you.
My hope is that you are excited to hear from me and that you will allow me to send you more letters as we go on.
Yours sincerely,
Muthoni
